For newer Xserve RAIDs with the SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable) port:
To extend the distance between the Xserve and Xserve RAID more than 5 meters, copper to optical conversion is necessary. This is accomplished with an Optical Transceiver in each of the Xserve and Xserve RAID's SFP ports., and a Fiberoptic Cable attached to both transceivers.
